CRICKET Malawi is running a Malawi Cricket Ambassador (MCA) coaching course for teachers in Mzimba North, in the country’s Northern Region, as part of efforts to introduce the game in more schools.
The two-day course runs from 19 to 20 October and is led by coaches Donnex Kansonkho and Chisomo Chete.
According to the association, the course gives teachers basic cricket knowledge and practical coaching skills so they can introduce the game to learners at their schools.
“By supporting teachers to become cricket ambassadors, we’re helping more children discover the game and building the foundations for regular cricket in school communities,” the association said.
The programme places cricket development in the hands of classroom teachers. It aims to establish regular cricket within school communities, rather than relying on visiting coaches alone.
School-based delivery is a model used elsewhere on the continent. In Namibia, the Ashburton Kwata Mini-Cricket Programme runs through physical education periods in public schools across all 14 regions. It won the ICC Development Initiative of the Year award for 2024.
The Mzimba North course is supported by the Malawi National Council of Sports and the Cricket School of Excellence.
