New Champions to Be Crowned as Wanderers Bow Out of Uganda T20 Cup

A new team will be crowned champions of the Uganda T20 Cup come 26 November, this after Wanderers were knocked out of the competition on Sunday.

The Wanderers beat Rounders in the final to win this trophy last year, but they were eliminated on Sunday following their six-wicket loss to Aboojo in the quarterfinals.

It was a comfortable victory for the Fort Portal side, who got their business done in the 14th over in the chase.

Aboojo will now face GM Sugar in the semifinals. GM, the overwhelming favourites, beat Rounders by nine wickets in their quarterfinal game, which was reduced to 13 overs due to morning rains.

With Kutchi Tigers out of the competition, GM remain the frontrunners to win this trophy. Kutchi Tigers suffered a shocking 14-run defeat at the hands of the Ismaili Community.

The Tigers progressed to the last eight as the only team that won all their group games, but they were unable to negotiate their way past Ismaili, who had Pervaiz Ali, scored 77 off 57.

Cyrus Kakuru gave Kutchi a great start in their chase, scoring 46 off 26. Still, after he fell from the second ball of the tenth over, the Tigers struggled, with Kakuru’s fellow opener Avnish Vekariya (19 off 16) and Rukesh Rabadiya (19 off 26) being the only other players who posted reasonable scores.

Ismaili will face the Avengers, who edged Ceylon Lions by 13 runs in the semis. These two sides (Avengers and Ceylon) met at the same stage last year, and the latter came out on top. On Sunday, however, they were overpowered.

Due to bad weather, the game was reduced to six overs. Avengers posted a smashing 70/5 thanks to their opener, Abraiz Amir Ali, who scored 24 off nine balls.

Robinson Obuya had offered a good opening for his side in their chase, scoring 26 off nine, but Ceylon, who were without at least four starters

including Cosmas Kyewuta, Juma Miyaji, Hamu Kayondo and Frank Nsubuga came short by 13 runs.

It was a perfect revenge for Avengers. They got demoted to the Championship in the 50 Over League, but with them now in the semis, they have something to look forward to this year.

The semifinals will be played on Sunday at the Entebbe Cricket Oval, with the final set for 26 November at Lugogo.
