Bennett, Marumani Fire as Zimbabwe Crush Namibia by 33 Runs

ZIMBABWE’s batters produced a commanding display to overpower Namibia by 33 runs in the opening T20 of the three-match series on Monday at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.

Electing to bat first, Zimbabwe posted a formidable 211 for 3 in their 20 overs, thanks to a dazzling innings from Brian Bennett. The right-hander struck 94 off just 51 balls, decorating his innings with eight fours and four sixes, setting the tone for Zimbabwe’s assault. Tadiwanashe Marumani played a superb supporting role with 62 from 48 deliveries, while captain Sikandar Raza provided the finishing touches with a quick 23 not out to guide his side past the 200-run mark. Extras contributed nine, but it was the firepower from Zimbabwe’s top order that left Namibia with an uphill task.

Namibia’s bowlers tried to stem the flow. Ruben Trumpelmann picked up a wicket, and Alexander Busing-Volschenk grabbed two, but at an economy rate above 10 runs per over, containment was impossible.

Chasing 212, Namibia struggled from the outset. They lost early wickets, including Malan Kruger for 13 and Jan Frylinck for 21, as Zimbabwe’s bowlers kept them under pressure. Blessing Muzarabani was a standout with 2 for 38, supported by skipper Sikandar Raza who claimed 2 for 31, and Brad Evans and Wellington Masakadza both chipped in with crucial strikes.

Namibia’s top scorer, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, made 38, while Gerhard Erasmus added 26. Despite some resistance from Zane Green (33) and Ruben Trumpelmann (20), Namibia could only muster 178 for 7 in 20 overs, falling short by 33 runs.

Zimbabwe’s innings had set the tone from the powerplay, scoring 50 runs in just 6.6 overs without losing a wicket. Marumani and Bennett shared a 124-run opening stand that left the Namibian fielders chasing shadows. Bennett reached his 50 off just 35 balls, while Marumani smashed six fours and two sixes in his 62-run effort.

In the end, Zimbabwe’s combination of explosive batting and disciplined bowling ensured a comfortable victory.

The win gives Zimbabwe a 1-0 lead in the three-match series
