HARARE – TAKASHINGA Patriots flexed their domestic muscles on the international stage, defeating the visiting Jersey side by 5 wickets in their first One Day matchup at Takashinga Cricket Club on Thursday.
Fresh off winning the National Premier League (NPL), the Patriots carried their momentum into this clash.
Led by a strong all-round bowling performance, the home team successfully chased a modest total posted by Jersey.
Opting to bat first, the Jersey batsmen struggled to find a rhythm against the disciplined Takashinga attack.
Patriots’ bowling attack, led by the ever-reliable Roy Kaia, stifled Jersey’s batting line-up. Kaia, with his three-wicket haul, was the architect of Jersey’s downfall.
Opener Stainely Norman fell early to young spinner Ryan Simbi, setting the tone for a challenging day at the crease. Harrison Carlton top-scored with 47 before he was dismissed by Tapiwa Mufudza.
Kaia was the pick of the Takashinga bowlers, claiming 3 crucial wickets, including the scalps of Zake Tribe and Jonty Jenner.
Simbi also chipped in with 2 wickets, while Tafadzwa Tsiga and Munashe Chipara provided able support.
Jersey were eventually bowled out for 180 in 44 overs.
In the run chase, Takashinga lost opener Tanunurwa Makoni early, but a 55-run second-wicket stand between Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Rodney Mupfudza stabilised the innings.
Kamunhukamwe then took charge, striking a blistering 77 off 75 studded with eight boundaries and three maximums to effectively seal the victory for the hosts.
Mupfudza’s contribution of 55 runs further solidified the Patriots’ dominance.
With the target in sight, the Patriots cruised to victory, reaching 182/5 in 33.2 overs.
