Namibia seal historic series win with five-wicket victory over Ireland

NAMIBIA claimed their first ODI series victory over a Full Member nation after beating Ireland by five wickets in the fifth and final match at the High Performance Oval in Windhoek on Sunday.

The hosts chased down a modest target of 130 in just 21.2 overs, finishing on 131/5 to complete a 3-2 series win after a commanding display from their bowlers had restricted Ireland to 129.

JJ Smit and Jack Brassell did most of the damage, sharing seven wickets between them as Ireland were bowled out in 33.1 overs.

Smit returned figures of 4/20 from nine overs, including three maidens, while Brassell took 3/15 in 6.1 overs. Their efforts left Ireland struggling to build any meaningful momentum after being asked to bat first.

Ireland lost Tim Tector for five in the second over, then struggled to recover as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Cade Carmichael made 27 from 57 balls and Harry Tector scored 21, but neither could turn a steady start into a substantial innings. Captain Lorcan Tucker briefly lifted the scoring rate with 20 from 14 balls, including two sixes, before Smit took a return catch to remove him.

Ireland were 84/4 when Tucker departed. Smit then struck twice more in the same over, dismissing Curtis Campher and George Dockrell without scoring to leave the visitors in serious trouble.

Jordan Neill provided some late resistance with 33 from 25 balls, hitting four fours and a six, but Brassell removed him and then accounted for Jai Moondra to end Ireland’s innings at 129.

Ruben Trumpelmann, Max Heingo and Willem Myburgh took a wicket apiece as Namibia’s attack maintained pressure throughout.

The chase was not entirely straightforward, but Namibia were always in control of the required rate.

Michael van Lingen made 15 before falling to Moondra, while Louren Steenkamp and Jan Frylinck helped take the score to 68. Frylinck was dismissed for nine, and Steenkamp followed after making 46 from 44 balls, with six fours and a six.

Gerhard Erasmus then took charge, scoring 30 from just 18 deliveries. His innings included three fours and a six, and pushed Namibia closer to the target before Matthew Humphreys removed him.

Malan Kruger made 15 before becoming Gavin Hoey’s only wicket. With 13 runs still needed, Zane Green finished the job in a hurry, striking an unbeaten 11 from four balls, including a six. Willem Myburgh remained unbeaten on three as Namibia reached their target with 172 balls unused.

Humphreys finished with 2/48, while Moondra and Hoey claimed one wicket each.

A series decided by Namibia’s consistency

The result completed a series in which Namibia recovered from losing the opening match to win three of the next four.

Ireland took the first ODI by 55 runs, but Namibia responded with victories by 31 runs and 63 runs to move ahead in the contest. Ireland kept the series alive with a 130-run win in the fourth match, setting up Sunday’s decider.

The final match exposed the difference between the teams on the day. Ireland’s batting failed to cope with Namibia’s pace attack, while the hosts made the most of a small target through Steenkamp’s measured innings and Erasmus’ brisk contribution.

Smit’s four-wicket haul earned him the Player of the Match award. Erasmus was named Player of the Series after a productive campaign with both bat and ball, finishing with 263 runs and four wickets.

For Namibia, the series win represents a significant result against a Full Member opponent and a reward for a campaign in which they found ways to respond whenever Ireland threatened to take control.

Ireland, meanwhile, will look back on the fourth ODI as evidence of what their batting can produce, but their collapse in the decider left them with too much to do.

Final: Ireland 129 all out in 33.1 overs; Namibia 131/5 in 21.2 overs. Namibia won by five wickets and took the series 3-2.
