Sierra Leone coach Mutusva leads ICC Level 3 course in Netherlands
Sierra Leone cricket coach Sylvester Mutusva is in the Netherlands delivering an ICC Level 3 Coaching Course, marking another milestone in his work as an international coach educator.
Mutusva, who was born in Harare, is an ICC Coach Master Educator and serves as Cricket Sierra Leone’s high-performance coach, a position he took up in late 2025.
Cricket Sierra Leone (CSL) congratulated him on the assignment, describing it as an opportunity for the federation “to be intentional about development, strategic about capacity building and ambitious about the standards it wants to establish.”
The Level 3 qualification is among the higher stages of the ICC’s coach education pathway. As a Coach Master Educator, Mutusva is responsible for training and assessing other coaches rather than working directly with players.
Since joining CSL, Mutusva has advocated for expanding cricket into schools and open spaces across the country, alongside improving the standard of local coaching.
“You can’t send someone for development when they don’t have the basic techniques,” he said shortly after his appointment. “Cricket is transforming, it is not like it has been 10 years before.”
He has also challenged the emphasis on infrastructure alone, arguing that expanding participation and spreading the game are equally important.
“My belief, it’s not about having so many cricket facilities,” he said.
CSL has invested in coach education in recent years, sending local coaches to an ICC Level 2 course in Abuja and conducting Level 1 training in Sierra Leone with ICC Master Educators.
Mutusva’s assignment in Amsterdam highlights the growing contribution of African coach educators to cricket development beyond the continent.
He has also been involved in cricket officiating in Zimbabwe, including domestic competitions and Under-19 matches.
His work in Sierra Leone and the Netherlands adds to the experience of a Zimbabwean coach contributing to the development of the game at international level.
