THE Zimbabwe National Premier League weekend was lit up by a string of individual masterclasses that proved decisive across the country. From centuries and fighting fifties to deadly bowling spells, players rose above the rest and stamped their mark on the competition.
At Kwekwe Sports Club, Innocent Kaia stole the show for Takashinga Patriots 1 with a superb 102 off 101 balls. His innings, laced with a six and 12 boundaries, laid the platform for his team’s 242 for nine. Partnering Joylord Gumbie (52) in a 125-run opening stand, Kaia ensured Patriots had the upper hand despite a five-wicket burst from Isaac Okpe. Graeme Cremer then rolled back the years with figures of 4 for 21 as Mbizo were bundled out for 154, sealing an 88-run win.
At Old Hararians, another Takashinga side produced a star act. Kupakwashe Muradzi hammered an unbeaten 73 off 60 balls as Patriots 2 chased down Eastern Titans’ 113 with ease. Titans never recovered after Daichi Nyandoro and Ryan Simbi shared six wickets, and Muradzi’s stroke play finished the job in style.
In Masvingo, Queens Sports Club were anchored by Munashe Chimusoro’s 92 and Tanatswa Bechani’s 64 in their total of 266. Although Calvin Mubvute hit a blistering 83 for Chiredzi, Chris Mpofu’s 4 for 25 ended hopes of a chase and sealed an 84-run victory.
The standout bowling performance of the weekend came from Rimuka’s Nickel Kombora. His extraordinary figures of 7 for 25 wrecked Westside, who crashed to 73 all out in reply to Rimuka’s 270 for six. Earlier, Takudzwanashe Kaitano (71) and Brandon Mavuta (63*) had lifted Rimuka, but it was Kombora’s relentless spell that made the match unforgettable.
At Alexandra Sports Club, runs flowed quickly as the hosts powered to a six-wicket win over Amakhosi 2. Chasing 177, Muhammad Anas Aqil struck 51 and Faraz Akram 49, wrapping up the contest inside 20 overs.
Masvingo witnessed another century when Brian Chari struck 117 for Amakhosi 1 in their total of 282 for seven. His partnership with Bright Phiri (44) gave them the start they needed, and although Bright Njanji replied with 94 for Methane Lions, the combined efforts of Tawanda Maposa (4 for 41) and Talent Dzikiti (3 for 30) secured a 37-run win.
The weekend closed with Rangers showing their strength at Old Georgians Sports Club. After Gladiators managed 200, thanks to contributions from Munyaradzi Chingoruma (31), Rangers cruised to victory on the back of a brilliant unbeaten partnership of 167 between Jarod Basson (88*) and Dion Myers (70*).
