Zimbabwe face must-win against India as Africa watches 2nd T20I in Harare
ZIMBABWE carry the hopes of the continent into today’s second T20I against India at Harare Sports Club, needing a win to keep the series alive and give African cricket a rare shot at the world champions.
India lead 1-0 after a clinical seven-wicket win on Thursday, and another victory will seal the series for the T20 World Cup holders. For Zimbabwe, it is about pride, progress, and proving that African teams can compete with the very best.
Game 1 followed a familiar script. India won the toss, bowled first, and reduced Zimbabwe to 19 for two in the powerplay. Brian Bennett fell first ball and debutant Ben Curran made 29, but the hosts could not build. It took Wessly Madhevere’s battling 39 off 34 and Tadiwanashe Marumani’s unbeaten 27 off 20 to push Zimbabwe to 125 for seven.
India’s pace attack was ruthless. Mayank Yadav’s two for 18 and Prince Yadav’s two for 19 exploited the bounce at Harare Sports Club, a surface that Madhevere later described as “a bit difficult to bat” early on.
The chase was over in 13.2 overs. Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed 50 off 19, while Ishan Kishan’s 35 and skipper Shreyas Iyer’s 28 not out underlined India’s depth. Blessing Muzarabani’s two for 26 was Zimbabwe’s only breakthrough.
Across Africa, the result was watched closely. With South Africa, Namibia and Uganda all pushing to close the gap on the Full Members, Zimbabwe’s performance against India is a measuring stick for the continent.
“We lost too many wickets in the powerplay,” Madhevere said afterwards. “It’s one of the things that we, the boys, will definitely look at and hopefully we’ll get it right the next game.”
That is the challenge today. Zimbabwe cannot afford another top-order collapse against Mayank and Prince Yadav. They also need more from the middle. Madhevere and Marumani’s partnership offered hope. The two “grew up together” and their stand steadied the innings. “Having a guy like him at the crease, it sort of gives you that calmness that you need, especially when you’re under pressure,” Madhevere said.
India, meanwhile, look settled. Sooryavanshi’s fearless debut, Kishan’s experience and Iyer’s calm finishing sent a message to the rest of world cricket. Captain Iyer said: “The start Mayank gave was great. Today’s performance gives everyone some confidence.”
For Zimbabwe, motivation is not lacking. “You’re playing the best in the world,” Madhevere said. “It doesn’t get any better than that. It’s also a chance to showcase your talent.” He spoke too about handling pressure at this level. “The only way to lift that pressure off your shoulders is to trust the process and go with the things that you know.”
The Harare pitch is expected to play similarly: tricky in the first six overs, better as dew comes in. That makes the toss and powerplay crucial. If Zimbabwe bat first, survival is key. If they bowl, Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava must replicate what India’s quicks did on Thursday.
The stakes go beyond the series. A competitive showing would boost Zimbabwe’s ICC rankings and send a signal to the rest of Africa that the pathway is working. A heavy defeat would raise more questions.
“The support that we get from the fans, it’s more than anything we can ask for,” Madhevere added. “I feel like the boys will definitely pull through. Hopefully, the fans will do the same. But it’s going to be an exciting next game. I’m pretty sure.”
India will look to wrap up the series 2-0. Zimbabwe will look to keep it alive and fly the African flag.
