Uganda’s Victoria Pearls Aim High in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier

THE Uganda Cricket Association has announced its 14-player squad, the Victoria Pearls, set to represent the country in the 2025 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier.

The tournament, scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 6 in Windhoek, Namibia, will feature eight teams divided into two groups. Uganda is drawn in Group B alongside Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

Coach Deus Muhumuza expressed optimism about the squad’s balance and depth, highlighting the contributions of debutant Naume Jane Amongin and students Malisa Ariokot and Irene Mutonyi, who have balanced school commitments with cricket.

“We’re excited about how our new players will bolster the squad,” he said.

“Our goal is to qualify for the Global Qualifier.”

Captain Janet Mbabazi echoed the team’s readiness, welcoming Amongin to the squad.

“I think we’re in a good place,” said Mbabazi.

“The team has been working hard since the year began, using every game and training opportunity to improve ourselves and build our teamwork. I believe we are all pumped up and ready to do our best.”

The Victoria Pearls have been training hard, fine-tuning their skills and building team cohesion. With a strong squad and a clear goal, they are determined to make a strong impression and qualify for the Global Qualifier – the final gateway to the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales.

The team’s journey begins on August 31, and all eyes will be on them as they take on Tanzania, Rwanda, and Kenya in the group stage. Uganda will need to navigate past tough opposition to achieve their dream of returning to the world stage.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, with the finalists earning tickets to the ICC Global Qualifier.

As Coach Muhumuza put it, “We’re focused on executing our plans and capitalising on our strengths.”

Captain Mbabazi added, “I believe we are all pumped up and ready to do our best.”
