AS the Zimbabwe Chevrons cricket team gears up for the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifier in Kenya, head coach Justin Sammons exudes an air of quiet confidence.
Reflecting on the squad’s intense preparations over the past month, Sammons is pleased with how the team has come together.
“We had three weeks of rigorous training camps before finalizing our selection,” Sammons recounted.
“The squad has really gelled well, and I’m very happy with how our preparations have gone.”
Following the second edition of the Zim Afro T
T10 tournament, the team underwent a refining process that Sammons is excited about.
“I’m thrilled with the final lineup we’ve landed on,” he said.
“Our expectation is to win every game we play.”
However, Sammons is quick to acknowledge that success will not come easily.
“We have the utmost respect for every opponent,” he emphasised.
“There are no small nations in our minds, it’s simply a battle between bat and ball, and we have to execute our skills to the best of our ability.”
The team’s long-term vision remains an internal focus, but Sammons stresses the importance of staying in the present moment.
“This is a journey, not an overnight project,” he explained.
“Our immediate priority is taking it one step at a time.”
Sammons is particularly enthused about the blend of youth and experience in the squad.
“The younger players bring such great energy that infuses the whole team,” he noted.
“And it’s invaluable to have the guidance of our seasoned veterans to help the newcomers grow.”
As the team sets its sights on Kenya, Sammons is keeping the focus squarely on their own performance.
“Our focus isn’t on the opposition, it’s on ourselves,” he stated.
“We have a clear process and game plan that we’re committed to executing, and that will be our sole priority.”
With a steadfast commitment to their own development and improvement, coupled with respect for their rivals, the Zimbabwe Chevrons appear set for a strong showing in the upcoming qualifier.
