Zimbabwe Cricket pays tribute to former captain’s impact on and off the field

FORMER Zimbabwe Women captain Mary-Anne Musonda has retired from international cricket, closing a career that helped drive the growth and evolution of the women’s game in the country, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said in a statement.

Appointed captain in 2018, Musonda led during a key period of development for Zimbabwe Women. Reflecting on her role, she said:

“Captaining Zimbabwe Women meant carrying more than results. It meant carrying the hopes of a growing game.”

“We weren’t just playing matches, we were helping lay a foundation for the next generation, where every performance mattered in shifting perceptions and opening doors.”

“It wasn’t just the captaincy title – it was everything it represented . . . it felt like all those quiet battles had come full circle. More than personal achievement, it meant something bigger.”

At domestic level, Musonda was a central figure for Rhinos, representing the Midlands and Mashonaland West provinces and playing a major part in strengthening the women’s domestic structure.

Off the field, she also set a benchmark academically. Musonda holds a Master’s degree in Development Finance from the University of Cape Town, underlining her role as a role model for young athletes balancing sport and education.

As she steps away from the international arena, Musonda plans to focus on mentorship and development. On her legacy, she said:

“The legacy I hope to leave behind goes beyond records or milestones. It’s about impact . . . if, years from now, more girls are playing cricket in schools and more pathways exist, then that, to me, is the real legacy.”

Her message to aspiring players remains direct:

“Your dream is valid . . . don’t wait for permission to dream big.”

Paying tribute, ZC Chairperson Tavengwa Mukuhlani praised Musonda’s service and influence. In the ZC statement, he said:

“Mary-Anne has been a true servant of Zimbabwe Cricket and a pioneer for the women’s game. Her leadership, professionalism and commitment have left an indelible mark on our cricketing landscape.”

“Her contribution goes beyond runs and records – she has helped shape the growth and direction of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe, and her legacy will be felt for many years to come. On behalf of Zimbabwe Cricket, we thank her for her outstanding service and wish her every success in this new chapter of her life.”
