Uganda Secures Land for First-Ever Home of Cricket

CRICKET Uganda has finally secured a permanent home for the sport after more than 20 years of searching.

The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has acquired 15 acres of land in Nakasajja–Gayaza, about 27 kilometres from Lugogo, to build the country’s first dedicated cricket facility.

UCA chairman Jackson Kavuma described the achievement as a historic moment that will shape the future of cricket in Uganda.

“This is a generational milestone for Ugandan cricket. The Board stood together, and I commend CEO Evelyn Kabongerwa and her team for securing legitimate and dispute-free land. Although one club, Tornado C.C., did not agree for personal reasons, the majority approved the acquisition through the Land Fund. All surveys and environmental checks passed. Uganda cricket can now breathe,” Kavuma said.

Cricket Uganda also thanked the Land Board, led by Ketan Shukla, for its key role in securing the site.

“We faced many challenges getting this land, and we are delighted that we finally have it,” Shukla said.

“Now we begin phase two. When you seek support without land, people ignore you. But when you go with land, partners listen. Our next mission is to turn this place into a world-class cricket facility.”

Cricket Uganda CEO Evelyn Kabongerwa Shinyekwa stated that the land search was thorough and conducted under the guidance of experts.

“We started looking actively last year, with help from colleagues like Mr. Richard Okia. We assessed several locations, but Nakasajja stood out. It is close to Lugogo, only 1km from the trading centre, has a natural stream for water harvesting, and the terrain is naturally flat and suitable for sport. The scenery is green and perfect for a cricket environment,” she said.

Okia, who led the land identification team, confirmed the careful process.

“We inspected sites in Nakasajja, Gayaza, Mukono and Kalagi before settling on this choice on September 30. Board members and technical officers were involved throughout. After several checks, Nakasajja remained the best option,” he said.

The land deal was officially signed on 01 November 2025, at Lugogo. The Land Board will soon announce the groundbreaking date and development phases.

Cricket Uganda praised its Board, member clubs, technical teams, past leaders and the cricket community for supporting this achievement.
