Victoria Pearls Ease Past Tanzania

AFTER suffering four defeats in their opening five games at the ongoing ICC Women’s Emerging Nations T20 Trophy in Bangkok, Thailand, the national senior women’s cricket team, the Victoria Pearls, finally found their second win of the tournament.

The side beat their East African rivals, Tanzania, by 7 wickets on Friday in what was one of the lowest scores at the tournament.

Having sent in Tanzania after winning the toss, Deus Muhumuza’s team bowled out their opponents with a ball to spare, with the board reading a paltry 54.

They then chased the target inside the 13th Over, losing three wickets in the process but getting the job done in the 12.3 Over.

Contributions from the opening pair — team captain Janet Mbabazi (13 off 14) and Esther Iloku (28 off 41) — ensured that.

Immaculate Nakisuuyi, who came in one down, managed just two runs, but owing to her bowling performance that had her pick two wickets for 12 runs in four Overs, she was named the game’s MVP.

Former captain Consy Aweko, however, topped everyone in bowling as she conceded only three runs in her allotted four Overs. She recorded an outstanding economy of 0.75 and picked a wicket as well.

The victory takes Uganda to four points, level with PNG, who they beat to secure their first win, but it keeps them sixth — a place ahead of Namibia and two ahead of Tanzania, who are placed bottom of the standings.

Scotland, who beat Uganda in their opening match, lead the table with a maximum ten points. The European side is the only nation that has won all its games.

Uganda will take a rest tomorrow and return to action on Sunday against the Netherlands in what will be their last game.
