ZC slams Coltart’s racism claims

DAVID Coltart’s recent outbursts against Zimbabwe Cricket have crossed a line, with “baseless” accusations of racism aimed at their black administrators, the cricket motherbody revealed in a hard-hitting statement on Tuesday.

The facts, however, paint a starkly different picture.

According to ZC, “Coltart’s social media tirades, masquerading as concern for cricket, are nothing but a thinly veiled attempt to sow division and undermine the progress ZC has made. His claims of non-existent racist policies are not only dangerous but also deplorable, distracting from the real work of developing Zimbabwean cricket.”

ZC further notes that “the facts speak for themselves. Since independence, ZC has made remarkable strides in transforming the sport, making national teams more representative of the country’s demographics. We’ve complied fully with the ICC Anti-Discrimination Code, ensuring fairness and transparency in our operations.”

The cricket board also highlighted that “Coltart’s record tells a different tale. As Minister of Sport, he politicised cricket, fueling division and crisis. His past actions, including supporting an unjust system, contradict his current posturing as a champion of Zimbabwe cricket. Notably, his role in the infamous black-armband protest during the 2003 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup had far-reaching consequences. England’s subsequent refusal to travel to Harare for their World Cup match sparked a 23-year freeze in bilateral cricket relations between the two countries – a rift that only ended in May 2024 when ZC successfully negotiated a historic one-off Test at Trent Bridge.”

In conclusion, ZC asserts that “ZC rejects Coltart’s cynical campaign to destabilise the sport. We stand firmly on unity, fairness, and sporting excellence. Our cricket is a shared heritage, not a tool for divisive politicians clinging to a bitter past. The cricketing community and the public can see through Coltart’s charade. We call on them to stand with us as we build a brighter future for Zimbabwean cricket.”
