Chevrons fire on all fronts to overpower Bangladesh by 32 runs in first T20I

THERE was a time when Zimbabwe searched desperately for match winners. Today they have an abundance of them.

At Queens Sports Club on Wednesday, almost every phase of the game produced a different hero as Zimbabwe defeated Bangladesh by 32 runs to take control of the three match Twenty20 International series.

Brian Bennett lit the early spark with another fearless innings, hammering 44 from only 30 deliveries as Zimbabwe raced beyond 50 inside the Powerplay.

His attacking approach ensured Bangladesh’s bowlers were immediately placed under pressure despite Nahid Rana eventually producing an outstanding spell of four for 26.

When Bennett departed with Zimbabwe on 90, the innings briefly lost momentum.

Captain Sikandar Raza had earlier struck a brisk 20 from 13 balls before Ryan Burl assumed responsibility during the closing overs.

Burl remained unbeaten on 30 while Brad Evans injected fresh energy with a blistering 19 not out from just 10 deliveries, striking four boundaries that lifted Zimbabwe to an imposing 170 for six.

If the batting laid the platform, Zimbabwe’s fast bowlers delivered the masterpiece.

Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani hunted in tandem with remarkable precision.

Ngarava’s hostile short ball accounted for both Bangladesh openers before Muzarabani dismissed Parvez Hossain Emon, reducing the visitors to 34 for three inside five overs.

Although Yasir Ali counterattacked with an impressive half century, Zimbabwe continued to create pressure through disciplined bowling, sharp catching and energetic fielding.

Milton Shumba’s clever off spin removed Bangladesh captain Towhid Hridoy, while Raza’s direct hit to run out Nurul Hasan demonstrated Zimbabwe’s intensity in the field.

Once Bangladesh entered the closing overs, Ngarava and Muzarabani simply refused to loosen their grip.

Ngarava finished with four for 26 after dismissing Yasir Ali and Mohammad Saifuddin, while Muzarabani produced the perfect finish by claiming Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed and Nahid Rana to return outstanding figures of four for 17.

Their combined haul of eight wickets exposed Bangladesh’s batting frailties and highlighted the growing strength of Zimbabwe’s fast bowling resources.
