Kaitano’s Unbeaten Century Highlights Zimbabwe A Fightback Against Ireland A

TAKUDZWAISHE Kaitano produced a patient and determined century as Zimbabwe A responded to Ireland A’s imposing first-innings total on the second day of their match at Harare Sports Club on Friday.

The opener remained unbeaten on 108 as Zimbabwe A were bowled out for 261 in reply to Ireland A’s 424, leaving the hosts trailing by 163 runs heading into day three. Kaitano’s innings was the standout performance for Zimbabwe A, having come to the crease in the third over after an early collapse.

Zimbabwe A suffered immediate setbacks when Tanunurwa Makoni was dismissed for four and Matthew Campbell was trapped lbw by Mark Adair for the same score. Kaitano then set about rebuilding the innings, occupying the crease for 228 deliveries and striking eight fours and two sixes in a marathon knock.

He found support from several teammates as Zimbabwe A sought to recover. Dion Myers contributed 46 in an 80-run partnership for the third wicket, while captain Roy Kaia made 20 during a 45-run stand. Johnathan Campbell added 19 in a partnership worth 33, before Clive Madande provided the most significant support with 45 runs in a sixth-wicket stand of 70.

Once Madande departed with the score on 236, the lower order offered little resistance. Michael Frost managed two, Tinotenda Maposa scored four, Shelton Mazvitorera was run out without scoring, and Trevor Gwandu was dismissed for a duck as the innings came to an end.

Ireland A’s bowlers shared the workload effectively across 80 overs. Captain Matthew Humphreys led the attack with figures of three for 60, while debutant Byron McDonough and Gavin Hoey claimed two wickets apiece.

Former Zimbabwe Under-19 player Panashe Taruvinga, although not included in the playing XI, also made an impact. Acting as a substitute fielder earlier in the day, he took the catch that dismissed Hoey off Mazvitorera’s bowling to bring Ireland A’s first innings to a close on 424.

With Kaitano carrying his bat for an unbeaten century, Zimbabwe A will look to build on that resilience as they attempt to reduce the deficit and force their way back into the contest on day three.
